|The township of Del Coronado was planned to be integrated with the new buildings of Night City, providing a quaint "old town" area. When the project fell apart the integration was only half complete, leaving pockets of older urban conurbation in the midst of various semi-completed high tech construction sites.
Needless to say, it didn't turn out the way Richard Night had been hoping. Many of these old town areas ended up isolated, or their shops and services were made redundant by more modern facilities thrown up by corporations with little thought to zoning or local communities. Many were absorbed into the growing black hole of the Combat Zone, becoming burnt out shells, drug dens and brothels.
Little Italy is a fairly grimy area, but it hasn't gone under for two reasons. The first is its proximity to Corp Centre, which allows money to trickle in. The second is that it is home to the Mob in Night City, and while they might squeeze, they also make sure that "their people" get looked after to a degree - after all, they own most of these businesses, they wouldn't want them to go under.
North Side is slowly crumbling in the wake of increasing gang activity. Almost 40% of the gang fatalities in the downtown area occur here. The small businesses and cheap housing here don't matter enough to the city or the corps to intervene.
Old Downtown is similarly over-run with gangs. The area lacks identity and clout with the mayor's office. The only real concern this is causing is the fact that gangers are drifting into Medical Centre to cause trouble.
Little China has survived better than most, having partly modernised and managed to keep its cultural identity. Its right on the edges of the Combat Zone, and is fighting hard to keep it at bay. Its also quite an independent area of the city, run by the local tongs.
Charter Hill has been redeveloped by a large euro-corp and a powerful local hotel/casino. Its now relatively gang-free and one of the more pleasant places in the city to live in.
Studio City is a movie lot and associated industries. Its considered old-fashioned and outdated, and the corps would dearly love to redevelop this area.
